WiFi Firmware Hacking on Smartphones

Master Thesis, Bachelor Thesis, Diploma Thesis

In the nexmon project we started to reverse engineer the BCM4339 WiFI firmware of the Nexus 5 smartphone with the intention to enable monitor mode and frame injection on a modern smartphone. With the gained intelligence, we aim at extending the current firmware to achieve:

  • New firmware-based MESH implementations for emergency scenarios
  • An improved Ad-Hoc mode
  • Implementation of application-aware MAC layers
  • Reactive Jammers on a smartphone

If you are interested in one of those topics or have further ideas how open firmwares can be used to enhance security or performance, feel free to contact Matthias Schulz.
