Motivation

VLC (Visible Light Communication) offers high throughput without frequency restrictions, since there is no interference with legacy WiFi systems. Each light bulb can serve as access point in a VLC network, without any flickering being noticeable. Hence, this technology can be used in airplanes and medical or industrial environments.

OpenVLC is a cheap development platform with an open source Linux driver, which implements a simple on-off-coding for a LED. After loading the openvlc module on a BeagleBone Black, a network device appears, that can be used with normal network testing tools like iperf.


Goal

Your tasks:

  1. The current driver has stability issues. Most probably a rewrite of the code is required to fix these issues. This requires programming in C!
  2. The hardware design needs to be expanded to support coding schemes which use different brightness levels. (MSc thesis only)
  3. Add further modulation schemes, e.g. QAM. (MSc thesis only)
  4. Add a MAC layer that is aware of frame numbers etc.
  5. Make a performance comparison between the old and the new driver and modulation schemes.
